Architectural Paintings
This series of paintings reference the vernacular architecture of small cities and suburbs altered by mid-to-late-century ideals. The work is a product of my own renovation efforts in my 1840’s home in Beacon. Impossible spaces, and different time periods of one architectural structure, imagined or representational, are depicted simultaneously in a singular composition.
Common building materials such as Tyvek, Royalcote masonite wall paneling, layers of shellac, metal awnings, and hollow-core doors serve as leitmotifs. I am fascinated and repelled by these building materials as I senselessly represent the ugliest objects in the most beautiful way.
The care and effort of restoring my home, freeing it of layers of architectural blight manifests itself in these compositions, and as a visual document of the relational spirituality existing between architecture and the human experience.
PUBLIC SPACE DRAWINGS
This collection of drawings is based on an abstract system of indexing institutional spaces. I research turn-of-the-century postcards and historic photographs of cavernous armories, gymnasiums, and other public gathering spaces. Using these images as source material I construct layered and fragmented compositions articulating impossible spaces; a compendium of collective memory. As a child, I was interested in solitary activities and was often skeptical of team mentality and energy, yet was fascinated by the cult-like fanaticism surrounding athletics. A variety of materials, linear weight, and color washes are used to build up hues and textures familiar to anyone who has been in a school gym. The process of researching and cataloging these images is also an homage to the histories of winners, losers and the inherent flaw of memory.
BENCHED
Benched is a collection of drawings based on an abstract system of indexing institutional spaces. Researching turn-of-the-century postcards and historic photographs of cavernous armories, gymnasiums, and other public gathering spaces, these drawings embrace complex layering and fragmented architecture. Articulating impossible spaces, and tapping into a compendium of childhood memories, Robinson states, “I was interested in solitary activities and was often skeptical of team mentality and energy, yet was fascinated by the cult-like fanaticism surrounding athletics.” Focusing on a variety of materials, linear weights, and color washes, these images conjure hues and textures familiar to anyone who has been in a school gym. The process of deconstructing and reconstructing spaces dedicated to athleticism and team spirit is also a visual treatise about winners, losers, and the inherent flaws of memory.
Everything-2020
Everything is a series of work on paper that uses collage and mixed materials (Acrylic paint, String, Magazines and Color Aid) to create abstract environments. The work attempts to create depth and movement in space without relying on painted images and architectural features. While some of the imagery is distinguishable most are hand ripped scraps of paper and colored pencil lines that rely on each other to create the illusion of foreground and background. Large saturated shapes of color used in small quantities are also used as a compositional compass meant to lead the viewer through the environment.
